Rediscovery

Lancelot Malocello led a Genoese fleet that 'rediscovered' the canary islands in the end of the 13th century.







At that time the islands were inhabited by the indigenous people called 'guanches'. It is not certain where they originally came from, allthough most believe they have been berbers from the mountains of Northwest Africa.

In 1433 the rights of the Canaries were awarded to the Henry the Navigator of Portugal. But in 1436 the rights were reversed and awarded to the crown of Castile instead. In 1479 Portugal acknowledged these rights in the Alcovas treaty. In return they got sovereignty over Fez and Guinea.
